Ex-Oyo governor to lead anti-rigging campaign
    By Olalekan Adetayo, Ibadan
    Monday, 1 Nov 2010

A former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lam Adesina, has vowed to lead a one-man campaign against rigging during the 2011 general elections in the country.

A statement made available to our correspondent in Ibadan on Sunday said Adesina, a leader of the state chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, made this known at an event organised by the party’s governorship aspirants’ forum.

He expressed fear for the country’s stability if the 2011 general elections were rigged.

Adesina maintained that only free and fair elections could guarantee the continued stability of the country.

He assured the people of the state that the ACN has concluded plans to take over government from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state in 2011.

The former governor, however, said the task could only be achieved if there were free and fair elections.

While promising free and fair primaries within the party, Adesina assured the people of the state that whoever emerged as the party’s governorship candidate would do his best to turn the state around.

He, therefore, enjoined supporters of all the aspirants to emulate the cordial relationship existing among their principals by eschewing bitterness and violence.

He pointed out that the calibre of governorship aspirants in the party was enough evidence to show the party’s readiness to give purposive governance to the people of the state.

Earlier in his speech, the chairman of the ACN’s governorship aspirants’ forum, Prof. Wale Oyemakinde, had said that the party, through the forum, was showcasing brotherly love and comradeship.

He commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise and implored all the party supporters who were yet to register to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner.

Apart from Oyemakinde, other governorship aspirants at the event were Prof. Wole Akinboade; Dr. Ismail Adewusi; Chief Femi Lanlehin; Mr. Kazeem Adedeji; Senator Abiola Ajimobi; Mr. Soji Akanbi; Chief Charles Obisesan and Dr. Niyi Adelakun.
