Ibori’s wife gets five-year jail term

    November 23, 2010

The wife of the former Governor of Delta State, Theresa Ibori, has been sentenced to jail for five years by a London jury after she was found guilty on a two count-charge of money laundering.

Found guilty with Mr Ibori’s attorney, Bhadresh Gohil, who was on trial with Theresa. Mr Gohil was found guilty on a similar charge and was remanded in police custody.

He will be sentenced after the conclusion of another trial involving the laundering of proceeds of V-Mobile shares by James Ibori, Henry Imashekka, David Edevbie and former Akwa Ibom governor, Victor Attah. The trial will commence next Monday.

The recent anti-corruption campaign on the Ibori’s has also seen the conviction of the former governor’s sister Christine Ibori-Ibie; and mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo-Onuigbo in a previous trial for helping him move an estimated £70 million worth of looted funds through several London banks. The two women are currently serving five-year jail terms each in a London prison.

Mr Ibori is currently detained in the United Arab Emirates where the Dubai court of First Instance ruled in October that he should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face charges on corruption, official theft and money laundering saying he has “a case to answer in the UK.â€

THISDAY can report today that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar defeated Gen. Ibrahim Babangida by just one vote to emerge the consensus candidate of the Malam Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPFL) in the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential primary.

It has also emerged that former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme will head a five-man committee to pick a running mate for Atiku, who yesterday said zoning was the bedrock of Nigeria’s unity.

But the Deputy Director General of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organi-sation, Senator Kanti Bello, has described the decision of the consensus committee to select Atiku as “incomprehensibleâ€

    Consensus: IBB accepts Atiku’s candidacy

    By NDUBUISI ORJI
    Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Former Military President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, General Ibrahim Babangida, yesterday said he accepted the choice of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar , as the North’s candidate for the PDP presidential primary.

This was contained in a statement issued by the IBB Presidential Campaign Organization, signed by the Director-General, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, and made available to Daily Sun in Lagos.
Babangida said the outcome of the consensus candidacy which was spearheaded by former Finance Minister, Adamu Ciroma, and other Northern leaders must be applauded for the foresight and rigour of the search. According to him, the Ciroma committee must be appreciated for its principled commitment to the advancement of democracy in country.

“The outcome of the consensus exercise which the Adamu Ciroma Committee selflessly imposed upon itself in the past two months must be loudly applauded for the rigour of their search, conduct, and foresight. The machinery of success which they inaugurated previously has become further strengthened and deeply rooted. It shall be well with the Consensus outcome, and it shall manifestly be well for all Nigerians.â€
