CARNAGE was averted on friday 22nd sep 2010 in Awka, the Anambra State capital, when about 200 students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka held the city hostage following the arrest, detention and alleged manhandling of an unspecified number of their colleagues, including  the Students’ Union President, Nelson Omenugha.
It was learnt that trouble started when some policemen arrested them on their way home from a nightclub. But attempts by Omenugha and some students  to secure their release went awry and tempers rose on both sides.
In reaction, the students early yesterday stormed the popular Arroma junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and held up traffic, thereby disrupting commercial activities and vehicular movement for about three hours.
An executive of the Students’ Union, Israel Okonkwo said: “Some of our students were beaten up yesterday and when we came to rescue them, we were manhandled also and that is why we are protesting to ensure that they are released from the Central Police Station (CPS) Awka.â€
