    Blackburn makes Schalke offer for
    Raul 16 Aug 2011 16:49:59
Schalke has received an offer from
    Premier League side Blackburn for
    former Real Madrid striker Raul
Gonzalez. Schalke general manager Horst Heldt
told German daily Bild on Tuesday that
the Bundesliga club received an offer
from Blackburn on Monday and would
"meet with Raul and his agent today to
talk about it." "We don't actually want to let him go
but if he tells us he wants to go, we
will deal with it and enter negotiations.
There will be a prompt decision in the
matter, by tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the
latest," Heldt added. The 34-year-old Raul, whose contract
with Schalke runs until 2012, scored
22 goals in 55 games for the club
following his arrival from Real Madrid
last summer. "We won't give him away," Heldt told
Kicker magazine. "We'll see how the
discussions go." Raul is the all time Champions League
top scorer with 71 goals. He played in
all of Schalke's 12 games in the
competition last season, his five goals
helping his side to an unlikely
semifinal where it lost to Manchester United. Raul started each of Schalke's 34
games in the league last season,
scoring 13 goals and setting up four.
He scored again last weekend, with a
delightful chip over the goalkeeper in
Schalke's 5-1 rout of Cologne. He won the German Cup with Schalke,
but failed to score in the 5-0 win over
Duisburg in the final. Blackburn was bought by Indian
poultry giant Venky's last year. Since
    the takeover, the midtable Premier
League club has attempted to sign
    former England captain David
    Beckham and ex-Brazil midfielder Ronaldinho.

    The kidnappers of
    Michael Obi, the
    father of Chelsea
    midfielder John Obi
    Mikel, have made
    contact with the
    family.
    The kidnappers of
    Michael Obi, the
    father of Chelsea
    midfielder John Obi
    Mikel, have made
    contact with the
    family.
    The midfielder's
    father has not
    been seen since
    Friday evening,
    but the family
    have now received
    two phone calls
    from the
    abductors.
    Despite finding
    out the news of
    his father going
    missing on
    Saturday, Mikel
    played in Sunday's
    0-0 draw for
    Chelsea away at
    Stoke.
    A family source
    told
    KickOffNigeria.com
    : "They called
    mummy [Mikel's
    mother] and told
    her that we should
    not bother looking
    for Daddy in Jos
    because he has
    been taken to
    Lagos."
    A second call from
    the abductors was
    also made to the
    family revealing
    the location of the
    car which Mr Obi
    was driving when
    he was taken.
    But Tony Obi, the
    eldest of the Obi
    children, refused
    to say where the
    car had been
    found.
    "Yes, we have
    found the car. I
    can't say anything
    more for now," he
    said.
    Mikel had earlier
    made an emotional
    plea on TV
    appealing to his
    father's abductors
    for his safe return.
    "I've always tried
    to help the
    country, this is the
    time for the
    country to help
    me," Mikel told Sky
    Sports News.
    "Whoever knows
    where my dad is
    should please
    contact me."

Mixed news for United defenders 19 August 2011 Injured Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic will be out for longer than expected, but there was good news for Rio Ferdinand. Boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday the Serbian defender would miss up to five weeks with a calf injury.
But Ferdinand, who was expected to miss six weeks with a hamstring injury, is likely to return for the August 28 fixture against Arsenal.
"Last week, we thought Rio's hamstring would have him out for six weeks and with Vidic, we thought it was just a nerve problem. That's reversed itself," Ferguson said.
"Vidic has got a calf muscle injury, which means he'll be four to five weeks. It's longer than we thought."
"Meanwhile, Rio's injury isn't as bad as we thought and he could be ready for our game against Arsenal. I don't think he'll be ready for Monday (against Tottenham)."
"It's amazing how circumstances can change in a few days."
Both defenders were substituted in United's 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
England manager Fabio Capello will be glad for the news of Ferdinand's return, with England taking on Bulgaria (September 2) and Wales (September 6) in Euro 2012 qualifiers.
Ferguson will have left-back Patrice Evra back for Monday's Premier League meeting at home to Tottenham, while forward Javier Hernandez is also closing in on a comeback from concussion.
"Patrice is back which gives us experience. Chicharito (Hernandez) is back training and doing very well, as is (Antonio) Valencia, who will play in the reserves next week," Ferguson said.
"When will we bring Chicharito back? It depends. From a medical point of view, considering he had a concussion
before, we have to decide when is the best time to bring him back."
Midfielder Darren Fletcher is also likely to be fit after playing out another game with the reserves side.

    Premier League preview:
Manchester United v Tottenham 19 August 2011 An undermanned Manchester United welcome top-four chasing Tottenham in what shapes as an early danger game. The champions' 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion in the opening round of fixtures came at a cost with central defensive pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic succumbing to injuries.
It means youngster Phil Jones, 19, is likely to be partnered by either Jonny Evans, 23, or Chris Smalling, 21, at the heart of defence at Old Trafford on Monday.
They come up against a threatening Tottenham side who, after having their
opening Premier League fixture against Everton postponed, dealt Scottish side Hearts a 5-0 belting in Thursday's Europa League playoff first leg.
Five players netted goals, including dangerous attacking quartet Rafael van der Vaart, Jermain Defoe, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.
Manager Harry Redknapp was delighted with the display against Hearts and his team will need to produce something similar against United.
They have the perfect opportunity with Ferdinand and Vidic out and goalkeeper David de Gea under pressure following another error last time out.
The Spaniard, 20, joined from Atletico Madrid but has struggled to settle in filling the place of the retired Edwin van der Sar, letting in an Edin Dzeko strike in the Community Shield and Shane Long's effort at The Hawthorns.
Spurs midfielder van der Vaart will likely test the shot-stopper with his lethal left foot, while Defoe will be out to torment the inexperienced United centre backs.
Sir Alex Ferguson will benefit from the return of left-back Patrice Evra, while forward Javier Hernandez looks likely to miss again as he continues to recover from concussion.
Wayne Rooney will again shoulder a heavy workload up front, but he is coming off a strong first-up performance, which included a goal.
This shapes as a vital clash for Tottenham, whose next Premier League fixture will be against Manchester City, before a trip to Wolverhampton and a clash with Liverpool.
With wantaway midfielder Luka Modric's future still up in the air, Redknapp is relying on the creativity offered by van der Vaart, Bale and Lennon.
If they can keep a clean sheet, something they largely struggled to do even throughout their pre-season friendlies, they may come away with the points from Old Trafford.
But with Nani, Rooney and Ashley Young a constant threat, Redknapp's team will have their work cut out, especially away from home.

Odemwingie commits to West Brom 19 August 2011 Peter Odemwingie has signed a new three-year deal with West Bromwich Albion, contracting him to the English Premier League club until 2014. Nigeria striker Odemwingie joined West Brom on a two-year deal from Lokomotiv Moscow in August 2010 for a reported fee of 2.5 million pounds.
He scored 15 goals in 32 appearances last season as the promoted side finished 11th in the table.
The former Lille man was reportedly the subject of a four-million pound bid from Wigan Athletic, but he now looks set to remain at the Hawthorns.
"Peter Odemwingie has given Albion a huge boost ahead of Saturday's trip to Chelsea by signing a new-and- improved contract," West Brom said in a statement on their website.
"The 30-year-old striker this afternoon committed his future to the Baggies until June 2014 by penning a three-year deal."
West Brom manager Roy Hodgson was delighted to secure Odemwingie's services for his first full season in charge of the Midlands club.
"I'm obviously very pleased that Peter has pledged his future to West Bromwich Albion," Hodgson told the club's website.
"I always believed this would be the case and I am grateful to both him and the club for reaching an agreement."
"We can now look forward to benefitting once again from Peter's goal-scoring prowess and seeing him play an important part in our campaign to stay in the Premier League for a second successive season."

Europa League: Fulham 3 Dnipro 0 18 August 2011 A Clint Dempsey brace helped Fulham defeat Ukrainian side Dnipro 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League playoff at Craven Cottage. Aaron Hughes opened the scoring from close range after 38 minutes of Thursday's match.
And USA international Dempsey made it 2-0 with his first shortly before the interval, before adding a second to complete the scoring four minutes after the restart.
Fulham manager Martin Jol left out Andy Johnson and John Arne Riise ahead of Sunday's English Premier League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
They joined Philippe Senderos on the bench, while Pajtim Kasami made his debut after joining from Palermo last month.
And it was the new man who enjoyed Fulham's first sight of goal, a shot powered straight at Dnipro goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka.
A second opportunity came from the head of Steve Sidwell, which also failed to trouble the visitors' stopper.
After those early exchanges, chances proved scarce through the first half, but with seven minutes remaining before half-time, the hosts did enough to break the deadlock.
Damien Duff played a corner kick short
to Matthew Briggs and Hughes got himself on the end of the youngster's low cross, guiding the ball into the far corner for 1-0.
It took just four minutes for Fulham to double their lead.
Stephen Kelly pulled the ball back for Sidwell on the right side of the Dnipro area, and the midfielder followed up with a perfect cross for Dempsey to slot home unmarked.
Fulham picked up where they left off in the second half, making it 3-0 on 49 minutes.
Dempsey was the man on target again,
meeting a well-flighted cross from Kasami with a powerful header to complete his brace.
Dnipro failed to test the Fulham defence for much of the match, restricted to the occasional corner from which they never threatened.
The visitors came closest on 76 minutes, when Nikola Kalinic danced his way through the Fulham defence and into the six-yard box.
But the striker was overwhelmed with defenders and lost control of the ball, which subsequently rolled to a grateful Mark Schwarzer in the Fulham goal.
The hosts might have been 4-0 up three minutes from time, when Dempsey struck a drifting cross in for Kasami at the back-post.
But the Swiss attacker slid in off balance and failed to hit the target, passing up the chance of a debut strike.

Mancini hoping for end to Nasri saga 19 Aug 2011 14:18:55 Manchester City manager Roberto
Mancini is optimistic that the club will
complete the signing of Samir Nasri
"very quickly" as the Arsenal player
edges closer to his departure from the
club. Negotiations between the two clubs
have rumbled on for several weeks
and Mancini is keen to acquire the
    French international as quickly as
possible. "I hope we can close it very quickly
now, but I don't know the last news
    about him because my concentration
is on the game," Mancini said. "But I hope - also because the market
finishes in the next 10 days." Mancini said he was unaware of any
possible glitch in the deal. "I don't know - this is not my job," he
said. "I don't know why, but it is
probably because Nasri is a good
player, or because there is some
problem." Meanwhile Mancini declined to expand
on speculation that City may soon
    offload striker Emmanuel Adebayor to
Spurs, saying only that it was
    "possible" the Togolese international
    may be sold.

Miyaichi set for Arsenal debut 19 Aug 2011 09:29:38 Japanese teenage striker Ryo Miyaichi
has vowed to become a Premier
League success story as he gears up
for his upcoming Arsenal debut. "I am thrilled. The season has already
begun and I want to join the team as
    soon as possible," the 18-year-old
said as he left Tokyo for London after
obtaining a visa allowing him to play
for the Gunners. "I want to show I can make it in the
top league. I want to produce results
there. I want to score as many goals as
    possible," Miyaichi told Japanese
    media before his departure on
Thursday. Miyaichi signed a five-year deal with
Arsenal in December when he was still
a high school student. But he could not immediately obtain a
work permit because he did not meet
    the Premier League requirement of
playing in 75 percent of the senior
national team's matches in the past
two years. He was loaned to the Rotterdam club
Feyenoord and helped them stay in
the Dutch first division last season by
scoring three goals and setting up
three others in 12 matches. His feat earned him the nickname
    "Ryodinho" after the veteran Brazilian
striker Ronaldinho. Miyaichi was recently granted a British
work permit on the grounds of being
    an "exceptional talent", Arsenal boss
Arsene Wenger said. "He will play as a striker, right or left,
he is a winger type and he is very
keen," Wenger said last week, adding
    the Japanese striker "should be
available" as early as Arsenal's second
league match against Liverpool on Saturday. "I have no worries. All I have to do is
    challenge," the fleet-footed Miyaichi
said. "It would be great if I can
emphasise my speed. I intend to
produce results, either goals or assists.
I am confident of that." Miyaichi is the second Japanese
footballer to have signed for the
Gunners and he follows in the
    footsteps of former midfielder Junichi
    Inamoto, who spent one unsuccessful
season at the club in the 2001-2002 season.

EPL draws 750 000 visitors a year 19 Aug 2011 01:03:33 The lure of the Premier League has
brought many of the world's biggest
names to play football in England --
and it also draws huge numbers of
fans from abroad to watch it. More than 750 000 visitors to Britain
attended a match last year according
    to figures from national tourism
    agency VisitBritain, underlining the
global appeal of English football. In the process they provided a boost
to the British economy, with all those
    visitors who watched a match
    spending a combined £595 million.
Those visitors who watched a football
match spent £776 on average -- rather more than the £563 million spent on
average by incoming visitors. Given the long-standing popularity of
English football in Scandinavia, it is
little surprise to note that visitors from
Norway are most likely to come to
watch Premier League football - one in
13 Norwegian tourists arrive specifically to attend matches. Second on the list are visitors from the
United Arab Emirates -- a number that
may grow given that country's links
with Manchester City, the club owned
by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al
Nahyan and sponsored by Etihad, the national airline of Abu Dhabi. Around 40 percent of those who
attended a match said that watching
sport was the main reason for visiting
the UK. The research suggests that
    football helps draw visitors during
quiet times of the year, with the greatest proportion of inbound
visitors going to a match between
January and March. Of those who come to Britain to see
family and friends, those most likely to
take in a football match are from
Japan, China and Australia. As for
business visitors, it is those from
Norway who take in most matches. MOST POPULAR The most popular grounds for foreign
visitors are Old Trafford, Anfield and
the Emirates Stadium. Premier League football is broadcast
live in 212 territories around the world
and the British tourist authorities are
doing their utmost to exploit the
popularity of the self-styled 'home of
football'. VisitBritain launched this year a
    dedicated Premier League section on
    its website which features interviews
    with international Premier League
players on what they most like about
living in Britain, as well as recommendations on what visitors
should see and do in the country. Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy &
    Communication at VisitBritain said:
"Not only do some of the best players
in the world want to play in Britain, but
their international fans want to follow
them here to savour the atmosphere of a match." Thankfully VisitBritain did not enlist
the help of Carlos Tevez, the
    Manchester City-based Argentina
striker who was highly critical of the
place when speaking on a TV chat
show in his home country in June. Asked what was wrong with
Manchester, Tevez, who is keen to
leave the club, said: "The weather,
    everything. It has nothing."

    Odemwingie signs new West Brom
deal 18 Aug 2011 19:22:37 Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie,
whose 15 goals helped keep West
    Bromwich Albion in the Premier
League last season, signed a new
three-year deal with the club on
Thursday. The deal was announced as manager
    Roy Hodgson confirmed that the
Midlands side had rejected a £4 million
($6.6m) bid for the 30-year-old from
    top-flight rivals Wigan Athletic last
weekend. "A bid did come in from Wigan but it
was way, way below our valuation of
the player. I know it was a very easy
one for us to turn down," said
Hodgson of a player signed for £2.5
million from Lokomotiv Moscow last summer. "I'm obviously very pleased that Peter
has pledged his future to West
    Bromwich Albion. I always believed
this would be the case and I am
grateful to both him and the club for
reaching an agreement. "We can now look forward to
    benefiting once again from Peter's
    goalscoring prowess and seeing him
play an important part in our
campaign to stay in the Premier
League for a second successive season."

    Mikel’s family negotiating with
    kidnappers. . .

    Friday, 19 Aug 2011
      – managers of Mikel Obi –
have said that the family of the Super
    Eagles and Chelsea midfielder are
    negotiating with the kidnappers of
Mr Michael Obi. They, however, dispute the amount being negotiated
with the kidnappers released to the
public by the media. The family had
    insisted the kidnappers had no
contact with them. The group said in a statement that
reports in Nigeria of an £80,000 ($
    130,000) demand were inaccurate
but that the sum requested was
    “sizeableâ€

    Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson
will not let anyone down against
    Liverpool, says his former Charlton
boss Phil Parkinson The man who nurtured his early
career backs 19-year-old to hold his
own if called upon for full debut
    against Kenny Dalglish's men in
blockbuster clash this weekend 19 Aug 2011 09:45:00 Carl Jenkinson,Arsenal EXCLUSIVE By Rob Stewart
Anxious Arsenal supporters have been assured that rookie defender
Carl Jenkinson will have the ability and
temperament to cope with the big-
    game atmosphere when the Gunners
face Liverpool on Saturday. The clubs’ Premier League clash at the
Emirates will mark the teenager’s top-
flight debut but Phil Parkinson, who
    helped nurture Jenkinson’s talents
    while managing Charlton Athletic, is
certain that he will flourish under the spotlight.
“I am certain that Carl will be relishing
his Premier League debut and I can
say with a degree of confidence that
he will not let anyone down,â€

    Arsene Wenger confirms Samir
Nasri is in Arsenal squad to play
    Liverpool and does not doubt
    Manchester City target's
commitment The French boss has praised the

season amid transfer saga and says

Uefa rules By Sam Bisby 19 Aug 2011 14:51:00 EPL: Arsene Wenger, Newcastle v Arsenal Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has placed Manchester City target Samir Nasri in his squad for Saturday’s Liverpool tie. The Gunners have already lost club
captain Cesc Fabregas this week to
    Spanish giants Barcelona and are
seemingly close to losing the French
    midfielder to Premier League rivals
City. However, Wenger believes that the
playmaker will be committed to the
cause if he plays against Kenny
Dalglish’s side on Saturday. “The only thing I can say is Nasri’s in
the squad tomorrow and available to
    be picked and to play,â€

Arsene Wenger insists he has no
    intention of walking away from
Arsenal and has asked the fans to
trust his judgment in the transfer
market. - Dein: Wenger could consider future - Gunners seal Campbell deal - UEFA opens disciplinary
proceedings - Nasri included in Arsenal squad - Mancini: Nasri deal close With Cesc Fabregas having left and
Samir Nasri on his way, Wenger has
come under fire from fans and
    former Arsenal vice-chairman David
Dein suggested he could consider his
future. However, at his press conference on
Friday, Wenger said: "I will not walk
away from the club." Asked about the scrutiny he is facing
at present, he said: "That's part of the
world at the moment and I don't
have a problem with it perfectly
frankly because I can live with that. I
try to focus on making the right decisions for the club." With the fans eager to see top-quality
signings arriving at the club, Wenger
told them to have faith. "I believe I have shown in my 15
years here I am capable to make the
right decision for the right players -
you have seen more world class
players here, or as many as
anywhere else," he said. "You have to trust my judgment - one day
    somebody else will make the
decisions in my place and we will
have to trust him." Arsenal have already boosted the
    squad this summer, with Gervinho,
    Carl Jenkinson, Ryo Miyaichi and
Alex Chamberlain all coming in, and
    Wenger feels the criticism will
decrease when people realise their quality. "If you look well at the players we
have brought in, you will notice very
soon that we have brought top
quality players in - we have bought
    Jenkinson, Gervinho, we have
Miyaichi, we have Chamberlain," he said. "You will soon see that they are
all top quality players. "We have not lost so many players.
We have lost, of course, big players,
    but number-wise we should be
capable to do well. If we find quality,
we'll add quality to our squad and
we work very hard on it I must tell you. We have got a reputation for
looking too much at the money but
we want to add top quality to our
squad - that's all we want to do."
